1. Gangtok water supply
system
Gangtok, the capital , has a population of
approximately 180,000 as per 2001 census. The
source of Gangtok water supply is glacial fed
Lake Tamze (altitude 12,500 ft.) . Its rivulet,
Ratey Chu (altitude 8,200 ft), has been tapped
as the source of Gangtok Water Supply.
At present the quantum of water being brought
from the sources suffices the user needs. Water
is treated through different processes and made
potable at the treatment plant. Treated water is
reserved in 20 million liters capacity
reservoirs at Selep, and thereafter transported
to over 20 distribution reservoirs. From here,
water is futher distributed through a network of
over 150 km of Trunk lines, feeder mains and
distribution lines. Efforts are made to supply
water as per codifies national norms. |

2. Water Supply in other
towns and RMCs
Apart from water supply to Gangtok , the
Department looks after the water supply needs of
the three district administration centres of
Namchi, Mangan and Geyzing, and 7 other urban
towns --------Pelling , Ravangla, Rangpo
Jotethang, Singtam Marketing Centres in the
State. |

3. Gangtok Sewerage system
Gangtok is the only town of its category to have
a full-fledged sewerage system. The Syatem today
caters to pprox 25,000 people. Gangtok town
sewerage system stands timely implemented and
has been an immenses help for the community. It
is also helping to keep river Rongni Chu from
being excessively polluted. Sewage effluent is
treated at the Adampul treatment plant to render
it harmless and finally disposes of into the
river body. |

Presently, these areas
covered under the system are the New Market, Old
Market , Kazi Road, Tibet Road, Development
area, Zero Point area, Diesel Power system
continues , with many existing and new
developing areas being incorporated into the
system. |

4. Other operations
The WS & PHE Department is also responsible for
the construction and Maintenance of FIRE
Fighting Systems all over the State. The system
consist of construction of static underground
tanks and fire stands. |

government establishments and institutions all
over the state.

services in Gangtok.
• Maintaning all infastructure-water and sewer
pipe grids, treatment plants etc.in Gangtok and
other urban centres.
• Encouraging efficitive citizen participation
so that consumers enjoy the maximum benefits at
a minimum cost.
• Achieving a self-sustained public utility
system which encourages citizens to contribute
fairly to the cost of these services.
• Adopting strategies that take environmental
concerns into account while planning, leading to
a pollution free environment.
